A flat tire can happen at any time, and knowing how to handle it safely can save you time and stress. Here are some key do’s and don’ts to remember when changing a flat tire:
Become a valued member of the Bedford Auto Center community and enjoy exclusive benefits designed to keep your vehicle in top shape and your experience hassle-free.
- Do pull over safely. Find a flat, stable area away from traffic—preferably a shoulder or parking lot.
- Do use your hazard lights. This alerts other drivers and keeps you visible.
- Do apply the parking brake. It helps prevent your vehicle from rolling.
- Do use wheel wedges or blocks. Place them on the opposite tire to keep your car stable.
- Do follow your owner’s manual. It offers specific instructions for your car model.
- Do check your spare tire. Make sure it’s properly inflated before installation.
Don’ts:
- Don’t change a tire on a hill or soft ground. This can be dangerous and unstable.
- Don’t forget to loosen lug nuts before jacking the car. It’s easier and safer while the car is still on the ground.
- Don’t crawl under the car. Never place any part of your body under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
- Don’t ignore professional help. If you’re unsure or don’t feel safe, call for roadside assistance.
